Neuropathic pain is caused by damage or injury to the nerves that transfer information between the brain and spinal cord from the skin, muscles, and other parts of the body. Examples include reflex sympathetic dystrophy/causalgia (nerve trauma), post herpetic (post-shingles) neuralgia, components of cancer pain, entrapment neuropathy (carpal tunnel syndrome), phantom limb pain, and peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage). Currently, there are many medications and treatments available for the treatment of neuropathic pain.

However, the available treatments or early treatment can help treat the symptoms. Getting care as soon as possible can help reduce or prevent problems that occur with neuropathy, such as trouble sleeping, depression, and decreased functioning. It is a chronic condition that usually occurs with tissue injury. This can lead to damage, dysfunction, or injury to nerve fibers, which can lead to misfiring of signals to other pain centers. The effects of nerve fiber injury include changes in nerve function both at the site of injury and in the areas around the injury.

Neuropathic pain is often caused by nerve damage or a malfunction of the nervous system. The condition may occur in different body parts or due to an accident. Treatment for neuropathic pain varies based on the type of neuropathic pain. It is most often characterized by persistent, intense, and throbbing pain. Depending on the type, it can last from a few minutes to several days. Although it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of neuropathic or other types of pain, there are treatments that can provide relief.

There are many medications and treatments available for neuropathic pain. First line treatment in neuropathic pain is gabapentin, pregabalin, amitriptyline, and duloxetine. Second choice drugs are topical lidocaine and capsaicin, which can also be considered as primary treatment in focal neuropathic pain. Opioids; morphine, oxycodone, hydromorphone, and tramadol; are considered as third choice treatment. Opioids are efficacious when compared with other drugs used for the treatment of neuropathic pain.

Gabapentin and Pregabalin have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of neuropathic pain.
