Automotive lead acid battery is a rechargeable battery primarily used to ignite a vehicle engine and supply electric current to an automobile. It is primarily used to start the engine. Automotive lead acid batteries are highly compatible for motor vehicles to supply high current required by automobile starter motors. Because they are inexpensive compared to newer technologies, lead acid batteries are extensively used even when surge current is not critical and other designs can provide higher energy densities.

An automotive lead acid battery also referred to as starting, lighting, & ignition (SLI) battery. The battery is comprised of two types of lead in an acid mixture that perform an electrochemical reaction, convert chemical energy into electric current and lead to the production of voltage in an automobile. Moreover, automotive lead acid battery provides voltage to vehicle accessories such as wipers, air conditioner charging plug, and music player, among others. These batteries are currently being used in electric vehicles to supplement other battery loads.

Lead acid batteries offer only limited capacity, despite their significant bulk and weight, but have the advantage of being cheap and easy to both produce and recycle. These batteries are high-powered, safe, reliable, and inexpensive, however, their short calendar life and poor cold-temperature performance make them difficult to use in vehicles. Despite of this, automotive lead acid batteries are the leading component for the electric car industry today. Thus, there is an increasing demand for automotive lead acid battery worldwide.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), as of 2020, around 1.8 million electric vehicles (EVs) were registered in the United States. Lead-acid batteries in EV applications end up being a significant (25-50%) portion of the final vehicle mass. Different types of lead acid batteries are used in automobiles, and are primarily used to start the engine.
