Data center construction is the collective set of processes used to physically construct a data center facility. A data center is a building, a dedicated space within a building, or a group of buildings used to house computers and associated components, such as telecommunications, storage systems, and computing infrastructure, that businesses or organizations use to organize, process, store, and disseminate large amounts of data. As they house an organization's most critical and proprietary assets, data centers are vital to the continuity of daily operations.

The primary focus of data center construction is on the design and construction of efficient data centers with the required capacity, disaster resilience systems, and to perform all the required functions. The core elements of a data center are host, storage, applications, connectivity (or network), and the database management system (or DBMS) that are managed centrally. The construction process essentially refers to activities involved in the designing, planning, and the construction of a data center facility.

A well-established data center infrastructure is essential to the success of any data center. Data center infrastructure refers to the core physical or hardware-based resources and components, including all IT infrastructure devices, equipment and technologies, that comprise a data center. Data center construction primarily focuses on designing and building a data center using these key factors; capacity, disaster tolerant, and efficient design. A data center must have enough space to house all equipment and servers.

The facility must be able to resist natural calamities and disasters such as floods, earthquakes, tornados, snowstorms, etc. There are several factors that should be kept in mind while data center construction, as the number of data centers around the world is increasing with a rapid pace. For example, in June 2020, Aligned announced the expansion of hyper-scale data center campus in Virginia, beginning construction on a second 120 MW facility in Loudoun County (US). The new campus will offer around 1 million sqft of space and 180 MW of capacity.
