Lidocaine ointment is a topical anesthetic that doctors can apply to various parts of the body before certain procedures to cause loss of feeling or numbness. It is also used to relieve itching caused by a variety of conditions.

Usually, a doctor will recommend that to put on the cream 1 hour before the procedure. It is also not a good idea to use the cream on open wounds or on irritated skin. This could make the numbness last longer than necessary.

The ointment is also useful for relieving itching and pain caused by herpes or other infections. It helps prevent herpes outbreaks, and it also can reduce the duration of an episode when it occurs. It works by blocking the nerve signals that transmit pain sensations to the brain. It can be used in conjunction with other antiviral medications, such as acyclovir and valacyclovir.

It is also often used to treat itching, burning and irritation associated with hemorrhoids. Lidocaine can be applied as a spray, gel, cream, or lotion.

Some common side effects from using this ointment are burning or itching, changes in color of the skin, pain, swelling or blistering. These side effects typically go away within a few hours.
